Artist's Statement about
Flights of Fantasy: Beyond the Universe

Beautiful National Geographic maps have always captured my imagination. They became the inspiration and the material for my Cosmic Cape. With great respect for the original artistry involved with each map, it was nevertheless exhilarating to cut up the maps and use them in a new mode. I think the cartographers would have approved because I used the maps in the spirit of adventure and exploration!

Imbedded and attached to the Cosmic Cape are a variety of common objects which
take on new auras when integrated with the maps.

The Cosmic Cape soars through an imaginary Universe, also inspired by articles and photographs from National Geographic. The endless depth of the cosmos is intriguing and almost incomprehensible. Combining art and fantasy seemed like a suitable method to explore that which we can only imagine.
